I-Ships and P-Ships

When you leave ships on the surface of a world, they can either be placed in defense of industry (I-Ships) or population (P-Ships). Collectively, these planetside ships are known as "Home Fleets".

The ships on Home Fleets are the same ships that you can attach to fleet keys and send off to explore the galaxy. You can transfer ships freely between I-Ships, P-Ships, and any fleets at a world.

Leaving ships behind as I-Ships or P-Ships has several strategic advantages. First, these ships can defend your ownership of the world, without having to dedicate a valuable fleet key to that task. Another player who shows up at the world will have to take a turn to destroy your home fleets before they can capture the world from you.

Second, I-Ships and P-Ships can fire back at any enemy fleets, although they only fire at half the strength of ships on fleets. Each two I-Ships or P-Ships fires one shot, unlike a regular fleet, in which each ship fires one shot.

There are also some special functions for I-Ships and P-Ships. I-Ships can be scrapped to build industry, and both I-Ships and P-Ships can fire at converts.

Finally, home fleets are critical to defend your inner circle of worlds via ambush. If an enemy tries to send a fleet through one or more of your worlds without stopping, then your home fleets can automatically fire at the fleets as they pass by--and in this capacity, the home fleets fire the same strength as orbiting fleets, which for ambush is double strength--two shots from each ship--and they can fire repeatedly at each fleet that passes through.
