Vacation?

How do other RSW players handle vacation? Do you just skip a turn or two if necessary, or do you simply not enroll in a game if you have any vacation coming up in the next few months?

All of the above. I've seen people avoid signing up for games when their vacation is imminent. I've also seen people go ahead and sign up, but intentionally miss a turn (but be careful about missing two turns in a row--that will get your position declared abandoned).

Some people choose to keep their games going during their vacation. This depends on the nature of the vacation, of course (and the stubbornness of the individual), but many people will be bringing a laptop with them on vacation anyway, which makes it easy to keep up turns. Failing that, you can receive your turn reports and enter your orders via email and some pencil-and-paper effort, and most people's cell phones can handle email these days--or you can find an internet cafe in virtually any modern city in the world.

You can temporarily hand your position over to a friend, if you like, by explicitly withdrawing and allowing him to take it over. He can hand it back when you come back. This works best if your friend is not already involved in the same game.

Finally, you can request me to delay your game(s) for a length of time. If there's not an objection from the other players in the game, I'll do it.

Can you describe this option a bit more? Where in the interface do you withdraw, and how can you specify whom you allow to take it over?

Thanks.

On the web interface, when you are looking at a game report, there is an option at the bottom of the page to withdraw from a game.

When you withdraw from a game the position immediately becomes available for the general public to take it over. In order to arrange for a friend to take it, you'd have to both be online at the same time, and your friend would have to jump in and grab the position before anyone else does. There is a tiny window in which someone else might get there first, so I guess you do take a little chance with this approach. :)

If this becomes a problem, I might write an interface to allow you specifically to hand off a position to someone else. In the meantime, though, I think the risk is small enough that we don't need it yet.
