I'm pretty sure I once saw a map export file that contained the positions of worlds on the map. Including the x/y coordinates that I've dragged the worlds to. The memory sticks because I think I had to remove the lines by hand or script for some purpose I've now forgotten.
Does that kind of map export exist? I did I imagine it?
map export with world positions?
thanks duck
[I wander. Read through to end. I think my question is solved?]
I'm not sure how I missed it before. Now every xml file I save (via client or download from web page) includes the px and py attributes for worlds.
Is it possible that the coordinates started showing up after I started using File/Save to RSW Server a couple of turns ago? I just saw it in the menu one day and thought... saving must be good. I checked old XML downloads. Turn n had no coordinates. Turn n+1 had coordinates.
CLARIFICATION: The xml saves from the web page had coordinates because my scripts found them inside messages from other players. The client File/Save to XML files have coordinates. I was not trying client export until recently... when I saw the "preview" button on export messages from others. That showed me beautifully arranged maps from other players. I knew there had to be coordinates somewhere there, because my map is a maze of twisty passages, all different. Export for the win. Unless some non-duck tells me better.

Re: map export with world positions?
Indeed, if you generate an export from the client, it should always include the world positions; but when you generate it from the web interface they usually won't be there because the web interface doesn't actually know how you've arranged the worlds in your client.
