What is up with this game? I took up an abandoned position but it's still a no-go? I fear it is ill-fated.

The game settings specified a minimum of 9 players, which is why it would not start with only 8 players. I tweaked the game settings to allow it to start one player short. Now you're in an 8-player game, enjoy!
